Is Moissanite a real Diamond?

Nowadays many lovers are choosing a moissanite to be used in their engagement and wedding rings over a traditional diamond. With its rise in popularity and their striking resemblance one question arises. Is moissanite a real diamond?

is moissanite a real diamond

The short answer is no. Moissanite looks very similar to a diamond, but it is not a real diamond and also no diamond simulant! Moissanite is its own unique gemstone with own characteristics and a brilliance comparable to that of a diamond. Let's take a closer look.

What is Moissanite made of?

While diamond is carbon based, moissanite is made up of silicon carbide. Moissanite was first discovered in a meteorite by Dr. Henri Moissan in 1893 and is extremely rare to occur naturally. Most of the moissanite you find on the market are lab created making it both environmentally and ethically friendly as no mining is involved.

Is moissanite as good as diamond?

Moissanite is scoring a 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale emphasizing it being extremely robust and scratch-resistant. This makes moissanite a great choice for everyday wear fine jewelry and one of the hardest materials you can find just slightly behind diamonds which get a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale.

As stated before its brilliance is comparable to that of a diamond with even more  colors and fire when exposed to sunlight.

Can you tell the difference between Moissanite and Diamond?

With the untrained eye you would most likely see no difference at all. Moissanite come in all color grades from Z (deep yellow) to F (near colorless) and D (colorless) just like diamonds. Nowadays even fancy colored moissanite like pink, vivid yellow, blue or green are available.

To tell both stones apart you need professional equipment like a diamond tester. A diamond tester is used to determine diamonds and find counterfeit stones. It works by measuring the heat conductivity of a stone, but because heat moves through moissanite and diamonds quite similar even this testing method can mistake a moissanite for a diamond.

Should you get a moissanite?

If you are reading this you are likely still undecided whether to choose a moissanite or not. Let me tell you there is no right and wrong, it comes all down to personal preferences.

Many of our beloved customers choose to get a moissanite because they think they get more for their money. Our loose moissanite and moissanite jewelry will just cost you around 10% of equal loose real diamond and diamond jewelry. Many would rather get a high quality D grade colorless moissanite (browse loose moissanite for under $100!) than a subpar diamond with inclusions.

What do you think? Can a moissanite compete with a real diamond? We at Moissanite Gifts think they certainly do!
